Song - 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes
I don't remember the exact age in which I first watched The Sound of Music, but whatever the age, the story captivated me from the beginning. I watched the movie over and over. I sang and danced. To this day I have the dialogue memorized. And any day now I plan to introduce Charlotte to the magic. And to see her come alive with the sound of music.
One song in particular comes to me when I need a song to sing. When I need a lullaby for my children. When I auditioned the one time for my high school musical. When I can't think of any other song. When I need to smile.
My Favorite Things.
It gets me every time. It's my song and has been from the first time I watched Julie Andrews standing on the bed in the thunder storm. I want to be with the children dancing and singing.
Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens.
I sing it over and over again to my kids. I revel in the simple things that bring joy. I give thanks that I have Charlotte and Isaac to name as my favorite things.
Perhaps I need the song more than ever as I fear for the future and worry about the world my children will inhabit. I need the song pointing me to the joy and beauty in this world right now. I need goodness and the reminder to seek the good. To be the good.
Can a song change the world? Maybe. But for right now this song is changing my world. It's keeping me hopeful. It's pointing me to the simple and abundant goodness in my world. And compelling me to make sure I share it with others.
**All month I'll be participating in 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes. Each day I'll take some time (sometimes 5 minutes and sometimes a little more) to sit down and write. It's about the discipline of writing each day. It's about listening to the words from within. It's about letting creativity work in me. I'll share my writing at some point during the day on my blog. Thanks for reading.
