Why I go to the water

Hello, water at my feet.
Hello, you who brings forth life
and cradles the duck and heron
and reflects the sun and stars
and provides relief from a hot summer’s day
and welcomes all who long for a drink, even, the
doubting and the lonely -

best preacher that ever was,
dear water, that just happens to form our bodies
to keep us alive and refreshed
to nourish our crops and flowers
to keep us from thirst
to keep our lands and our souls from being parched -
hello, hello, hello.

Watch, now, how I remember
what I’m made of and who formed me.
